Some manifestations of climate change are visible — melting glaciers, rising seas, devastating storms. But permafrost is the invisible threat — silent, unseen, and yet profoundly destructive. Spanning nearly 9 million square miles across the Northern Hemisphere, this frozen ground holds twice as much carbon as the entire atmosphere. As it thaws, it releases greenhouse gases, intensifying global warming in a relentless feedback loop.

Recorded on location in and around Denali National Park, the team collaborated with scientists at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, documenting the sounds of thawing terrain, shifting ice, and the living environment atop permafrost. These organic recordings merge with Crowell’s ethereal saxophone performances—resampled, reimagined, and woven into an immersive textural palette that bridges field sound, music, and emotion.

Back in the studio, Van Kirk sculpted the material into a rich sonic ecosystem — percussive textures, atmospheric ambiences, tonal layers, and processed organic instruments, all designed for experimental composers, ambient producers, and sound designers exploring the intersection of nature, science, and sound art.
